Go Woo-suk Struggles in First Back-to-Back MLB Appearance, Gives Up Four Extra-Base Hits
Minnesota Twins pitcher Go Woo-suk experienced a challenging outing on May 21st (Korean time) at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio, making his first consecutive appearance in Major League Baseball. Entering the game in the seventh inning with the Twins trailing the Cleveland Guardians 3-10, Go surrendered three runs on four hits, including a home run and three doubles.
The right-hander’s struggles began immediately, as he gave up a solo home run to the first batter he faced, Patrick Bailey. This was not the first time Bailey, who had a batting average of just .183 before the game, had taken Go deep, having also homered off him in Go’s MLB debut on May 10th. Go’s 94 mph fastball, reportedly in the middle of the strike zone, was driven over the center field wall.
The difficulties continued as Go then allowed back-to-back doubles to Pete Halpin and Kyle Manzardo, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Halpin capitalized on a slider left over the plate, while Manzardo connected with a high fastball. Go finally recorded an out by striking out Travis Bazana but then yielded another double to Chase DeLauter, which scored two runs.
Go Woo-suk managed to end the inning by striking out Brayan Rocchio and getting Rhys Hoskins to fly out. Despite a previous outing on May 20th against the Chicago Cubs where he pitched a scoreless inning, his performance against the Guardians, marked by four extra-base hits allowed, saw his earned run average climb from 3.00 to 9.00. The Twins ultimately lost the game 4-13.
