Spain has secured the 2026 North American World Cup trophy, defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in an extended battle at New York-New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on August 19th. The victory marks Spain's first World Cup win in 16 years, with their defensive prowess particularly highlighted, conceding only a single goal throughout the entire tournament—a new record for a World Cup champion. This lone goal came in the Round of 16 against Belgium, when Charles De Ketelaere scored with a header, breaking goalkeeper Unai Simon's 649-minute clean sheet streak, though Spain ultimately won that match 2-1.
The post-match award ceremony, however, was overshadowed by the controversial presence of US President Donald Trump, who remained on stage alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum, and Canadian Prime Minister Marc Carney. Trump, who had earlier presented individual awards like the Golden Ball to Rodri, the Golden Glove to Unai Simon, and the Young Player Award to Pau Cubarsi, as well as medals to both teams, drew considerable boos and whistles from the crowd upon his entry and continued presence during Spain’s trophy celebration, despite gestures for him to exit the stage.
Adding to the tournament’s dramatic conclusion, Argentina’s Leandro Paredes was shown a red card after the final whistle for initiating a physical confrontation with Spanish players Eric Garcia and Gavi. Paredes, known for his aggressive play and role as a “bodyguard” for Lionel Messi, struggled to control his emotions following the defeat, leading to a scuffle on the pitch as Spain celebrated their victory. This incident mirrored a similar outburst from Paredes during the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
