Newcastle Bolsters Midfield with Highly-Rated Ajax Teenager Sean Steur
Newcastle United has completed the signing of 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax in a deal that could reach £23 million. The promising young talent arrived on Tyneside on Wednesday evening, undergoing a medical before finalizing his transfer to the Premier League club.
Steur’s move includes an initial payment of £20 million, with an additional £3 million in performance-related bonuses. This acquisition marks Newcastle’s third summer signing, following the arrivals of winger Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim and goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Reims. The teenager expressed his excitement, stating it was “an incredible feeling” to join a “giant club” in the Premier League, fulfilling his dream of playing in the world’s top league.
The midfielder joined Ajax’s academy in 2016, having started his career at RKAV Volendam. He made his senior debut during the 2024/25 campaign and enjoyed a breakthrough season last term, featuring in 25 matches across all competitions. Notably, he became Ajax’s youngest player to record an assist in the Champions League and was a regular in the latter half of last season, including a start in the win against Feyenoord at just 17.
Steur’s impressive statistics in the Eredivisie for players aged 18 or younger include leading in chances created (15), total carries (231), and duel success (56.8%). He also ranked second for passes (623), passing accuracy (89.7%), tackles (20), possession won (49), and duels won (46). Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe praised Steur as a “top young prospect,” seeing “real potential” for him to become a valuable player. Steur’s departure from Ajax reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over his role for the upcoming season, with the player seeking a more prominent position than the club was prepared to guarantee, leading to him being listed for their U21 squad.
