Samsung’s ascent to first place was cemented by a 9-2 victory over the LG Twins on July 7th at Daegu Samsung Lions Park, a win that propelled them to the top of the standings. They also defeated LG 6-5 on July 9th. The Twins, despite falling short of the top spot, saw one of their key players, Austin Dean, recognized with his second monthly MVP award. Dean has been a significant force, sharing the league lead in home runs with KIA Tigers’ Kim Do-young. Kim notably hit two two-run homers against the Kiwoom Heroes on June 25th at Gocheok Sky Dome.
The league’s popularity continued to soar, reaching 7 million spectators in record time by June 30th, marking a significant step towards a third consecutive season with 10 million attendees. The opening weekend alone, on March 28th and 29th, saw all games sell out for the second consecutive year. Capacities were met across multiple venues: 23,750 at Jamsil, 23,000 at Incheon, 24,000 at Daegu, 18,128 at Changwon, and 17,000 at Daejeon.
Beyond the leading teams, the Doosan Bears emerged as a dark horse, exceeding expectations. An Jae-seok, in his return to the first team on April 29th, contributed a home run and two hits in a 4-0 victory against the Samsung Lions. The KT Wiz also demonstrated their strength with a 6-4 win over the KIA Tigers on May 3rd. Some games faced interruptions, such as the May 27th match where the SSG Landers lost 4-1 to the Samsung Lions, and a game between the Kiwoom Heroes and KT Wiz in Suwon was declared a no-game due to rain after two delays totaling over two hours, with KT leading 3-0 in the fourth inning.
