Meslier Joins Arsenal on Free Transfer, Bolstering Goalkeeping Ranks
Arsenal has officially secured the services of goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer from Leeds. The 26-year-old French custodian has signed a two-year contract with the London club, which includes an option for a third year. His arrival, first reported by BBC Sport on June 30, comes after his departure from Leeds United last week.
Meslier spent seven seasons with the Yorkshire club, making 215 appearances across all competitions and registering 70 clean sheets. Despite his extensive experience, he lost his starting position at Leeds to Karl Darlow towards the end of the 2024/25 Championship season, a period during which he was noted for three errors that directly led to goals.
He is expected to initially fill the role of third-choice goalkeeper behind David Raya, who earned the Premier League Golden Glove in 2025-26 with 19 clean sheets in 37 games, and Kepa Arrizabalaga. However, with uncertainty surrounding Arrizabalaga’s future and his potential openness to a starting role elsewhere, Meslier could be elevated to the second-choice position. His transfer also facilitates a loan move for teenage goalkeeper Tommy Setford.
Meslier expressed his enthusiasm for the move, stating his happiness and pride in joining what he called “the biggest club in England” and “the champions.” He conveyed his eagerness to “show the love” for the badge and to “win trophies with this team,” emphasizing that Arsenal is a club that consistently needs to lift silverware.
