Ronaldo’s World Cup Chapter Closes with Tears and Debate

TITLE: Ronaldo’s World Cup Chapter Closes with Tears and Debate
The final World Cup appearance for Cristiano Ronaldo ended in heartbreak and a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the last-16 stage in Dallas. The veteran forward, aged 41, was visibly emotional as Mikel Merino’s injury-time goal sealed Portugal’s elimination, marking the conclusion of a storied World Cup career that saw him score in a record six tournaments.

Despite an illustrious career that includes five Ballon d’Or awards, five Champions League titles, and a Euro 2016 triumph with Portugal, the World Cup trophy eluded Ronaldo. His closest brush with the ultimate prize came in 2006 when Portugal reached the semi-finals. He departs the World Cup stage having played 233 games for his national team, and while acknowledging this was his last World Cup, he stated he would consult his family before deciding on his international future.

Ronaldo reflected on his contributions, noting, “I go with a clear conscience. I gave my all.” He highlighted Portugal’s success during his tenure, including three titles, emphasizing that the 2016 European Championship felt as significant as a world title. However, his role in the tournament sparked debate, with some, like former England striker Chris Sutton, questioning manager Roberto Martinez’s decision to start Ronaldo in every match, suggesting it hampered the team’s chances.
