Yankees Call Up Top Prospect George Lombard Jr. for MLB Debut
The New York Yankees are set to bring up top shortstop prospect George Lombard Jr., son of former Major League outfielder George Lombard Sr., for his MLB debut in Tuesday night’s game against the Cardinals. This move comes after a series of roster adjustments following Monday’s trade deadline and a loss to St. Louis.
Lombard, a 21-year-old infielder, was the Yankees’ first-round selection in the 2023 MLB Draft (26th overall). He is highly regarded within the sport, with MLB Pipeline ranking him as the team’s top prospect and the No. 20 overall prospect in baseball. CBS Sports also placed him at No. 26 among all prospects.
To make room for Lombard and newly acquired outfielder Heliot Ramos, the Yankees optioned shortstop Anthony Volpe, outfielder Jasson Domínguez, and reliever Angel Chivilli to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Luis Garcia Jr., another deadline acquisition, made his debut on Monday.
This season, Lombard has shown strong performance across three minor league levels, posting a combined slash line of .284/.411/.498 with 24 doubles and 60 walks in 78 games. At the Triple-A level, he recorded a .268 batting average, a .405 on-base percentage, and a .440 slugging percentage over 56 games, adding 16 doubles, six home runs, 21 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases. A rival scout noted Lombard’s professionalism and maturity, highlighting his ability to adapt and improve at each level, and expects him to provide exceptional defense in the big leagues.
