Phillies Bolster Infield and Bullpen with Deadline Deals for Arraez, Kilian, and Raley
The Philadelphia Phillies made significant moves at the August 3rd Major League Baseball trade deadline, acquiring veteran infielder Luis Arraez and right-handed reliever Caleb Kilian from the San Francisco Giants, and left-hander Brooks Raley from the New York Mets.
In the deal with the Giants, Philadelphia sent pitching prospects Ramon Marquez and Marty Gair to San Francisco. Arraez, a four-time All-Star and three-time batting champion, comes to the Phillies after batting .324 with an .801 OPS, four home runs, and 43 RBIs in 105 games this season for the Giants. The 29-year-old infielder, known for his exceptional contact skills and low strikeout rate, also returns to his preferred position at second base, a condition he sought in a trade. This season marked a return to second base for Arraez after being a primary first baseman for the prior two seasons.
Right-handed reliever Caleb Kilian, 29, also joins the Phillies from the Giants. He has posted a 4.26 ERA and a 3.59 FIP over 44 ⅓ innings this season, striking out 53 batters against 18 walks. Kilian retains rookie eligibility and offers several years of team control.
Separately, the Phillies acquired left-handed pitcher Brooks Raley from the Mets, sending minor league outfielder John Spikerman and right-hander Luke Gabrysh to New York. Arraez is currently playing on a one-year, $12 million contract and is slated to re-enter free agency after the current season.
