White Sox Bolster Rotation with Veteran Luis Castillo from Mariners
The Chicago White Sox, currently leading the American League Central, have acquired veteran right-handed starting pitcher Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners. The trade, announced late Saturday night, sends right-handed reliever Seranthony Domínguez, outfielder Nolan Jones, and catching prospect Boston Smith to Seattle. This move aims to solidify Chicago’s rotation as the trade deadline approaches.
Castillo, 33, brings a strong career resume to Chicago, including three All-Star selections over ten MLB seasons and a career ERA+ of 115. While his 2026 season with the Mariners saw him with a 3-9 record and a 5.06 ERA over 99 2/3 innings through 20 games, he did post a 3.88 ERA over his last ten appearances since May 25. He is anticipated to join the back end of the White Sox rotation, which includes Davis Martin, Sean Burke, and Erick Fedde.
As part of the deal, the White Sox will take on the remainder of Castillo’s contract, totaling approximately $30 million guaranteed. This includes the pro-rated portion of $22.75 million for 2026 and another $22.75 million for 2027. His contract also features a $25 million vesting option for 2028 should he pitch at least 180 innings in 2027.
For the Mariners, who are still in contention in the AL West, the trade provides valuable depth. Domínguez, 31, recorded 12 saves this season for the White Sox and held a 4.10 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings. Jones, 28, has major league experience and a .752 OPS in 38 games this season, while Boston Smith was formerly Chicago’s No. 15 prospect.
