Samsung Conquers Kiwoom in Extra-Inning Thriller, Extends League Lead
Samsung Lions emerged victorious in a hard-fought battle against Kiwoom Heroes on July 23rd at Gocheok Sky Dome, securing a 3-1 win in 11 innings to claim the three-game series. This crucial road victory pushed Samsung's season record to 55 wins, 2 ties, and 34 losses, widening their lead over second-place KT Wiz to 2.5 games and third-place LG Twins to 4 games.
The Lions drew first blood in the third inning after a series of small ball plays. Kim Ji-chan singled, followed by a fielding error by Kiwoom’s Seo Geon-chang on a sacrifice bunt by Kim Seong-yoon. A subsequent sacrifice bunt by Koo Ja-wook loaded the bases. Choi Hyung-woo was hit by a pitch, setting up Lewin Diaz’s sacrifice fly to left field, bringing Kim Ji-chan home for the game’s initial run. Samsung’s starter, Yang Chang-seop, delivered a strong performance, holding the Heroes scoreless through six innings despite taking a hard hit to his right thigh in the fourth.
Kiwoom, however, refused to back down. After Yang Chang-seop exited, the Heroes tied the game in the bottom of the eighth when Matt Davidson launched a solo home run off Samsung reliever Kim Tae-hoon. Kiwoom starter Ha Young-min pitched exceptionally well, completing seven innings and allowing just one unearned run on five hits and two walks, earning his third quality start plus of the season, though he was denied a win due to lack of run support.
The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 through the ninth and tenth innings. Samsung’s bullpen, particularly Kim Jae-yoon, played a pivotal role, entering in the ninth with the bases loaded and one out, successfully escaping the jam. The breakthrough for Samsung came in the top of the eleventh. After Choi Hyung-woo singled and Diaz walked, a sacrifice bunt by Ryu Ji-hyuk put runners on second and third. Lee Jae-hyeon then hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Yang Woo-hyun to break the tie. Kim Young-woong followed with an RBI single, which, combined with a deflected throw by the Kiwoom right fielder, allowed Diaz to score, extending Samsung’s lead to 3-1. Kim Jae-yoon closed out the eleventh, securing the hard-fought victory.
