Sunderland Bolster Squad with Veteran Belgian Defender Meunier
Sunderland has secured the services of experienced Belgium international Thomas Meunier, signing the 34-year-old defender on a two-year deal as the club prepares for a demanding season that includes both domestic Premier League action and a foray into European competition. Meunier, who arrives as a free agent after his contract with French side Lille expired, represents the Black Cats’ first acquisition of the summer.
Meunier brings a considerable pedigree, having played for Belgium in the 2026 World Cup and accumulating 83 international caps. His extensive club career spans more than 550 senior appearances, with notable stints at Club Brugge, Paris Saint-Germain—where he clinched three league titles—Borussia Dortmund, and Trabzonspor. He has also featured prominently in European club football, with 43 Champions League appearances and 33 Europa League appearances to his name.
The defender expressed his enthusiasm for joining Sunderland, citing the club’s ambition and the prospect of competing in Europe as significant factors in his decision. Director of Football Florent Ghisolfi echoed this sentiment, highlighting Meunier’s wealth of experience, leadership qualities, and proven ability to perform at the highest level, anticipating a positive influence on the squad both defensively and offensively.
Meunier, who is expected to integrate with the squad in early August, will link up with Régis Le Bris’s team as they embark on their second consecutive Premier League season and their first European campaign in 53 years. His arrival follows the departures of forward Eliezer Mayenda and midfielder Dan Neil, with the 6ft 3in right-back potentially challenging Trai Hume and offering the flexibility for Nordi Mukiele to shift to center-back.
