Frank Vogel Joins Warriors Coaching Staff as Associate Head Coach
The Golden State Warriors have secured a significant addition to their coaching staff, bringing in veteran coach Frank Vogel as associate head coach under Steve Kerr. This move fills a crucial vacancy left by the departures of Terry Stotts and Jerry Stackhouse, who were among Kerr’s top assistants.
Vogel, a seasoned NBA presence, will take on the role of the Warriors’ primary defensive game-planner, a responsibility previously handled by DeMarco and Stackhouse. Chris DeMarco himself left the Warriors in January to become head coach of the New York Liberty. Vogel’s extensive experience includes a championship run with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, where he led the team to their 17th NBA title in the “bubble” against the Miami Heat.
Prior to his time with the Lakers from 2019 to 2022, Vogel also guided the Indiana Pacers to two Eastern Conference Finals appearances in 2013 and 2014. His most recent position was as an assistant with the Dallas Mavericks under Jason Kidd. Vogel’s head coaching career spans over two decades, boasting a record of 250-181, including stints with the Orlando Magic and a single season with the Phoenix Suns.
The Warriors, coming off a 37-45 season where they missed the playoffs for the second time in three years, are looking to re-establish their defensive identity. Kerr, who recently signed a two-year extension, will now lean on Vogel’s defensive expertise to bolster a team that had its worst season under his leadership, outside of the 2019-20 campaign.
