Korea Advances in FIBA World Cup Qualifiers with Crucial Win Over Japan
TITLE: Korea Advances in FIBA World Cup Qualifiers with Crucial Win Over Japan
The Korean men’s national basketball team secured a vital 81-79 victory over Japan in their final Group B match of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers first round. This hard-fought win at Goyang Sono Arena on the 6th of the month averted an early exit from the competition and propelled Korea into the second round.
The win also marked a significant milestone for head coach Nikolajs Mazurs, who celebrated his first victory since taking the helm. Mazurs’ tenure began with a three-game losing streak, including two defeats to Taiwan and one to Japan.
Korea finished the first round with a 3-3 record, placing them second in Group B behind Japan, who ended with a 4-2 record. Had Korea lost this pivotal game, they would have been eliminated, finishing fourth in the group due to an inferior head-to-head record against Taiwan.
The team faced additional challenges, playing without two key shooters. Forward Lee Hyun-jung, a standout in previous victories against China, was unavailable due to his participation in the NBA Summer League. Additionally, guard Lee Jung-hyun, known for his three-point shooting, was also absent from the lineup.
