Haaland’s Late Double Eliminates Brazil, Sends Norway to Historic Quarter-Final
TITLE: Haaland’s Late Double Eliminates Brazil, Sends Norway to Historic Quarter-Final
Erling Haaland delivered a sensational performance on Sunday, scoring two late goals to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory for Norway over Brazil in the World Cup last-16. This historic win propels Norway into the quarter-finals for the first time ever, setting up a clash against either England or Mexico.
The 25-year-old striker broke the deadlock in the 79th minute with a header, towering over Gabriel. Just 11 minutes later, he sealed the win with a powerful low drive from outside the box, leaving the five-time champions stunned. These two strikes bring Haaland’s tournament tally to seven goals, placing him level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe in the race for the Golden Boot. He has now also scored in 14 consecutive international matches for Norway.
Despite only having four touches inside the box, Haaland’s impact was undeniable. Former Scotland winger Pat Nevin remarked on the winning goal, noting the lack of a clear opportunity, while former England striker Ian Wright highlighted that Haaland doesn’t require many touches to be effective. Brazil, under Carlo Ancelotti, found a late consolation goal from a Neymar penalty, but their wastefulness throughout the match, including a missed penalty by Bruno Guimaraes, proved costly.
Norway’s goalkeeper, Orjan Nyland, also played a crucial role, saving Guimaraes’ penalty and making a sensational stop to prevent a Kristoffer Ajer own goal after Haaland’s opener. With Stale Solbakken’s side now three wins away from an unlikely world title, and with Haaland in exceptional form, Norway will believe anything is possible as they prepare for their historic quarter-final appearance.
