Ohtani’s All-Star Pitching Role in Doubt After Dodgers’ Rotation Adjustment
TITLE: Ohtani’s All-Star Pitching Role in Doubt After Dodgers’ Rotation Adjustment
Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani is unlikely to pitch in the upcoming MLB All-Star Game, a decision influenced by the Dodgers’ recent adjustment to his pitching schedule to manage his workload. Manager Dave Roberts confirmed that it would be “hard to imagine” Ohtani taking the mound in the midsummer classic.
Ohtani, who was initially slated to start earlier in the week against the Athletics, had his next start pushed to Friday, July 4, against the San Diego Padres. This shift means his subsequent start would likely fall on July 10, leaving him with only three days of rest before the July 14 All-Star Game. Roberts indicated that the team prioritizes giving Ohtani extra rest whenever possible, especially considering his ongoing recovery from left knee inflammation.
Despite the probable absence from the All-Star mound, Ohtani’s performance on the season has been stellar. Heading into his July 4 start, he boasted an 8-2 record with a 1.58 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP over 79 2/3 innings in 13 starts. He also tallied 86 strikeouts. The Dodgers currently hold a 57-31 record, while the Padres are at 43-43.
Ohtani is already guaranteed a spot in the All-Star Game as the designated hitter, having received the most fan votes. Roberts, who will also manage the National League All-Star team, is expected to prioritize Ohtani’s health given his dual role and the team’s long-term goals.
