Germany Targets Klopp as Nagelsmann Departs After World Cup Upset
TITLE: Germany Targets Klopp as Nagelsmann Departs After World Cup Upset
The German football association (DFB) is actively pursuing Jürgen Klopp to lead the men’s national team, following Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation as head coach. Nagelsmann, 38, stepped down on Friday, just four days after Germany’s surprising elimination from the World Cup by Paraguay in the last 32.
The DFB confirmed that Klopp has indicated a fundamental willingness to consider the position, prompting the association to initiate discussions with the former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager. Nagelsmann, who was appointed in 2023 and had a contract extending until 2028, initially expressed a desire to remain in charge after the World Cup exit, stating he wouldn’t “run away.” However, after reflection and consultations, he requested to be relieved of his duties, a request granted by the DFB.
Nagelsmann’s tenure included guiding Germany to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals as hosts, where they lost to eventual winners Spain in extra time. His departure marks the end of an almost three-year stint, following a three-hour meeting at DFB headquarters to discuss his future. Reports suggest he was offered a severance package of approximately seven million euros.
Germany, four-time World Cup champions, have not won a knockout match at the tournament since their victory in 2014, failing to advance past the group stage in both 2018 and 2022 under previous coaches. The DFB is now focused on securing Klopp to usher in a new era for the national squad.
